Valve Stem Seal Replacement

Generally speaking the cylinder head is removed to replace the valve stem seals because the line of thought is, if the seal has started leaking then the valves, guides & seats will be worn as well. That sounds logical and makes sense, but if your on a budget and can't afford to spend that kind of money yet, then you may be able to replace your stem seals yourself without removing the head. The rope method shown in the video will work on every engine. Whether you can access the valve spring to compress it easily or not is another question. The method shown works on most OHV engines and may work on some OHC engines but the tool required to remove the springs may be totally different to the one used in the video. The engine I demonstrate on is a Holden 6 cyl.
