Toyota Coaster 1HZ Injection Timing Check

Due to the high kilometres on the odometer in my Toyota Coaster bus, I decided I will check the injection timing. Since the timing does not move from initial settings done back when it was reconditioned or last installed, this will be a good indicator of wear within the pump. I expect that the timing would be slightly retarded due to this wear.

I jumped on-line and searched for the tool required and found a cheap one on E-Bay and in the video I point out a small problem with cheap, but it was easily overcome. Unfortunately very limited space is available in the engine bay to get a camera in there as well as my hands so actual footage I am showing is minimal of the installation of the tool and consequent adjustment of the pump. Not mentioned in the video is that the outboard nut is the last one I loosen to enable the injection pump to rotate. I loosened it slightly while pushing the pump in the advance direction (push top of pump towards engine). I loosened all my injector pipes at the pump so that I did not stress them. Once the adjusting was complete, I retightened all the lines. I used a crows foot spanner to achieve this as an open/ring spanner won't work. If you are unable to loosen the pipes, the pump will still rotate but you do run the risk of pipe stress.

Please make sure the area around the centre bolt and injection lines is clean. Dirt is an enemy of diesel injection.

Everything I have covered here is in the 1HZ engine manual that I have made available for you. It is a 1990 version, so some specs could be different to your engine but the procedures for checking and adjusting are the same.  It also covers the 1PZ and 1HD-T engines from that era as well.
