Holden 6 Distributor Refurbish

Re-furbishing a distributor is not that complicated to do. The hard part is adjusting it and without a Distributor analyser becomes a bit more tedious. However we can get it somewhat close on the bench and then install it. Using a timing light we will be able to chech the current specs, like advance start, intermediate adv and full advance if the spec does not call for a high rpm. We are also able to check vacuum advance as well, that is to say we can see that it works but to check if it is within specifications we will need a vacuum pump with gauge.

A quick explanation of what a distribor does. In a 4 stroke engine the spark plug is fired just before TDC coming up to the compression stroke. The timing is set as per manufacturers specifications or your own spec if the engine is modified and this is done initially by moving the distributor body so as to align the points opening point to the timing spec. This is known as inial timing or base setting. This is fine for engine idle but as rpm increases and or load, the ignition timing needs to be advanced accordingly. Petrol needs more time to ignite as engine speed increases therefore the ignition timing must have a mechanism to be able to fire the spark plug earlier than the initial base setting. In comes the mechanical flyweights that are inbuilt in the lower part of the distributor housing below the base plate where the points are mounted or in some the advance weights are above the points. The base plate is allowed to rotate also in the advance direction and sometimes retarded direction depending on engine requirements. So now we have two ways to advance the timing depending on RPM and load conditions. Centrifugal advance is speed related where-as the vacuum advance is load related.

In the video I go through the teardown & re-assembly of a Bosch distributor from a Holden 6 engine and show how the centrifugal advance works.

Below is the schematic for a Bosch 6 cyl distributor. Not quite the same as the distributor in the video. The cap clips, base plate and points are slightly different, however all other parts are correct.
